My name is Paweł Sokołowski and I am a visual artist, photographer and curator. I was born in Września and raised up in Wałbrzych, in Poland. I graduated from the University of the Arts in Poznan .
I do documentary, creative and portrait photography and my preferred area to work in is the magical documentary photography. I use classical and early photography techniques and specialise in the method of the wet-plate collodion process. The majority of my photographic works are kept in a slightly sombre, black and white setting.
I am a co-founder of the „StreetCollodion Art” artistic collective which has been up and running since 2012 and got classified as part of „New Avant-garde” that uses the early photographic techniques. In this forum, a human being in the public space constitutes the the main area of interest. Among our greatest accomplishment so far is the project: „7 objets d’Afrique 7 artistes photographes” (7 objects of Africa 7 artist photographers”), which was exhibited at the Galerie Bernard Dulon in Paris.
I was curator of the Photography Gallery in Świdnica from 2009 – 2012, where I developed and led on a series of presentations called: „Young Professionals”. The presentations foucused on portraying the direction of artistic activities of photographers whose ideas matured during the post-1989 political transformation in Poland.
From 2006 – 2012 I led works on the independent project: „Ludzie Czarnego Złota” („People of Black Gold”). It depicted the socio-cultural changes, which took place after the shutdown of the Lower Silesia coal-mining area.
In the same period, I wrote photography reviews for the Wałbrzych Cultural Catalogue (Wałbrzyski Informator Kulturalny) as well as organised and delivered educational activities in the city and the region.
In 2003 and 2005 I received a financial grant from the mayor of the city council in Wałbrzych and again in 2014 from the Province Marshal of the Lower Silesia.
My photography works form part of the collections of the National Museum in Wrocław, the Contemporary Art Gallery „Zachęta” Wrocław, the Historical Museum in Lubin and various private collections.
